  • Available plats, surveys, site plans, or reference graphics and whether an overlay is requested.

  • Known access limitations, active work zones, site hazards, and areas that should not be photographed.

  • The desired final assets, including high-resolution photos, annotated images, progress comparisons, or video.

This preparation prevents a common problem: capturing a visually strong site image that does not include the feature the client needed to communicate. A few minutes of planning can determine whether the final asset is merely attractive or genuinely useful.

Capture the Full Context, Not Just the Parcel

A boundary image needs room around the property. If the crop is too tight, viewers lose the context that explains the site. Include nearby roads, intersections, neighboring development, natural features, and points of access where appropriate. This helps a viewer orient themselves without needing a separate map.

At the same time, avoid flying so high that the site becomes a small, indistinct shape. The right altitude depends on parcel size and surrounding conditions. A compact commercial lot may require a lower flight to keep building footprints and access points legible. A large tract may require several images at different scales: one broad overview, one closer boundary-focused frame, and detail images of entrances, improvements, or specific project areas.

For long or irregular properties, a single image is rarely enough. A series of planned frames can document the perimeter more accurately than forcing every feature into one wide shot. This is particularly useful for properties with creek corridors, winding access routes, phased development areas, or multiple points of frontage.

Use Overlays Carefully

Boundary overlays are useful because they remove guesswork for the viewer. A clean line, simple label, and restrained use of color can turn aerial photography into an effective presentation asset. The line should support the image, not overwhelm it.

Good overlay design begins with an uncluttered base image. Use a color that contrasts with the terrain but remains professional. Keep labels readable, identify major features only when they serve the assignment, and leave space around the property so the outline is not pressed against the image edge. If an image will be used in a report or marketing package, include a clear disclaimer when the boundary is approximate or derived from a client-provided reference.

There is also a trade-off between visual simplicity and technical detail. A presentation image for a potential buyer may need only the parcel outline, road name, and acreage. Keep Documentation Consistent Over Time

For active projects, repeatable imagery has more value than one isolated flight. Capturing the same viewpoints at scheduled intervals creates a visual record that can show clearing, grading, vertical progress, paving, landscaping, and final site completion. Boundary references give those images a stable frame of reference.

Consistency requires basic flight discipline. Record the approximate altitude, camera direction, framing, and key site features for each recurring view. Conditions will change, and exact duplication is not always possible, but a documented approach produces more meaningful before-and-after comparisons.
